Motherwort is a perennial member of the mint family that is original to Europe and Asia but is now distributed world-wide. The herb is also commonly used long with promoting the onset of labor.*

The active compounds in motherwort include the alkaloids stachydrine and leonurine, both of which have an effect on smooth muscle like the heart. Other constituents in the leaf and flowers include the antioxidant compounds rutin and quercetin.*

While the topical use of motherwort and small doses taken as tea are safe, tinctures or long-term use of the herb should be supervised be a qualified health care practitioner. Because this herb increases the risk of premature uterine contractions, it should not be used during pregnancy. Similarly, the presence of cardiac agents like leonurine can interact with prescription medicines or cause complications in people with heart disease. If in doubt, ask your doctor.*
