The Farish Street Historic District is made of about twenty square blocks north of downtown Jackson. The District supported a prosperous Black residential and business community that dated to the antebellum era in the state. By the 1830s, a cotton mill located near Farish Street “employed 45 black people, including children. In 1838, the railroad purchased 140 slaves for $159,000 to build a railroad from Jackson to Brandon [Mississippi]. When the railroad was completed and after the enslaved were free, many settled in and around Jackson near the Farish Street Historic District.
According to the Jackson City Directory in 1860, African American families lived in twenty-two houses in the area. These braves families were subjected to violence at the had of white supremacy terrorist groups like the KKK.
With the rise of Jim Crow segregation in the 1890s, the Farish Street district area was designated specifically for African Americans. Farish Street Historic District, is where African Americans owned thriving businesses; attended worship services; creating a successful business ecosystem and removed the discrimination hat awaited them at segregated, White-owned businesses. We could watched movies from the first floor and not the balcony; enjoyed concerts by artists like Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong; received herbal remedies from our root doctor; ate at restaurants sitting wherever we chose; walked the streets; worked at trades; and lived amongst each other with relative freedom from the bigotry of the neighboring White world.
